# Roaming app

## Select a Wi-Fi client, follow its roaming events, and inspect the captured traffic.

The Roaming Micro App on Sidos Wave lets you select a Wi-Fi client, follow its connections as it moves, and capture traffic for analysis. Bring Wave close to the client, identify it by its signal strength and MAC address, and select it. Wave then follows that client and predicts its likely roaming target, reducing the need to plan capture channels manually.

### 1. Open the Roaming app

Start Wave. From the home screen, scroll to the app list and select **Roaming**.

### 2. Select the client you want to follow

1. Use the actual device you want to investigate. Keep it communicating over Wi-Fi by using its normal application, opening a web page, or starting a video stream.
2. Bring Wave close to the client and wait for it to appear in the client list.
3. Use the received signal strength to help identify the nearby device. Confirm its **MAC address** against the client device when possible.
4. Tap the matching client to start following its Wi-Fi activity.

### 3. Follow the client as it moves

After selection, the top of the screen identifies the client and its Wi-Fi network. The current connection block shows the connection sequence number, access point (AP) MAC address, channel, received signal strength, and retry rate. The timer shows how long the current connection has been active.

![Roaming app showing the initial connection on channel 48](https://help.sidos.com/hs-fs/hubfs/sidos-wave-roaming-initial-association-channel-48.png?width=240&name=sidos-wave-roaming-initial-association-channel-48.png)

Keep Wave near the client while reproducing the route and application activity you want to investigate. For a mobile robot, Wave can be attached to the robot. For a handheld device, carry Wave with the device along its normal route.

Wave automatically follows the selected client and predicts the likely roaming destination. As the client changes APs, the app adds roaming events to the screen. Prediction helps collect the traffic, but it does not guarantee that every part of every event will be captured.

### 4. Check whether the roaming event was captured

A green event block is labeled **CAPTURED**. Review the event details and capture indicators to see what was recorded. In this example, the client moved to channel 60, the roam is labeled **Open**, and **Assoc** has a check mark.

![Green CAPTURED roaming event on channel 60, with Roam Open and an Assoc check mark](https://help.sidos.com/hs-fs/hubfs/sidos-wave-roaming-captured-event-channel-60.png?width=240&name=sidos-wave-roaming-captured-event-channel-60.png)

The current app uses indicators such as **Deauth**, **Assoc**, and **EAPOL**. These refer to deauthentication, association, and Extensible Authentication Protocol over LAN traffic. Read the indicators alongside the roam type and inspect the packet capture when you need to establish exactly which frames are present. A cross should not, by itself, be treated as proof that the client's connection failed.

### 5. Review a partial capture

An orange event block labeled **PARTIAL** means the roam was detected but the capture is incomplete. In this example, the client moved to channel 136 and the Deauth, Assoc, and EAPOL indicators show crosses.

![Orange PARTIAL roaming capture on channel 136 with Deauth, Assoc, and EAPOL crosses](https://help.sidos.com/hs-fs/hubfs/sidos-wave-roaming-partial-capture-channel-136.png?width=240&name=sidos-wave-roaming-partial-capture-channel-136.png)

A partial capture does not establish why packets are missing or whether the client experienced an application problem. Review the available traffic before drawing a conclusion. If you need more evidence, repeat the route with Wave near the client to collect another attempt.

### 6. Copy the packet captures to your Mac

1. When you have collected enough data, stop the capture by swiping up on the Wave screen or briefly pressing the power button.
2. Connect Wave to your Mac. If Wave is in power-saving mode, wake it by tapping the **Cloud Sync** app. If your firmware does not include Cloud Sync, use the **Survey** app instead.
3. In Finder, press **Command + K** to open **Connect to Server**.
4. Enter `nfs://wave.local/shared` and click **Connect**.
5. Open the shared folder and copy the relevant PCAP files to your Mac for analysis in Wireshark or another packet analysis tool.

### 7. Find the event in the packet capture

Open the capture in Wireshark and review the packet comments added by Sidos. These annotations identify activity and the associated AP, helping you find roaming events without searching through the entire capture manually.

Use the event details on Wave together with the captured packets to understand what happened before, during, and after the roam.
